What is a leg length discrepancy?
Leg length discrepancy (LLD) is a condition of unequal lengths of the lower limbs. The discrepancy could be in the tibia, or femur,or both. In some conditions, the whole side can be affected, including the upper limbs.
There are generally two kinds of leg length discrepancies structural discrepancy and functional discrepancy.
Structural discrepancy
occurs when either the femur or tibia bone in one leg is shorter than the corresponding bone in the other leg. These may occur due to congenital or developmental factors.
Functional discrepancy
occurs when the leg lengths are equal, by symmetry is altered somewhere above the leg, which in turn disrupts the symmetry of the legs. For example, muscular weakness, spinal problems, ligamentous flexibility, and restricted ranges of motion at the ankle, knee, or hip can all lead to compensations that result in LLDs.
Causes a leg length discrepancy
There are numerous and varitied causes of a leg length discrepancy.

Some children are born with legs that are of unequal length or bowed tibias that are accompanied with a leg length discrepancy.

A discrepancy can result from an injury. For instance, a fracture damages the cells responsible for growth of the bone, while the corresponding bone on the other leg grows normally. In some cases, fractures can also lead to overgrowth of bone during the healing process, resulting in a longer than normal bone. Young people with femoral fractures commonly have overgrowth situation.

In other cases, a leg length discrepancy can occurs gradully over time. for example, Osteomyelitis is a type of diseases of the bone, can injure the growth plate, where growth in length occurs. Therefore a discrepancy occurs gardually over time.
