Internal tibial torsion

What is internal tibial torsion?

Internal Tibial Torsion (ITT) normally know as Tibial Torsion. It is a very common condition in early childhood in which the tibia is twisted inwards axially, causing the child to intoe as he walks.

The cause of internal tibial torsion

  • Fetus is in a compact posion in the uterus, with the lower extremities folded up against the body.  The legs fit into this compact position by an inward rotation of the tibias.  If the rotation remains the same in infancy, the child will have internal tibial torsion.
  • This twisted position normally unwinds in infancy, before the child learns to walk.  Due to internal bitial torsion, if the rotation does not unwind, there will be in-toeing when the child walks.

The symptons of internal tibial torsion

  • medial rotation of the tibia at the knee causes toe-in while walking
  • The condition does not cause pain.

Treatments of internal tibial torsion

  • If your chirld has ordinary internal tibial torsion case, more physicians will suggest no treatment is needed, and the condition will correct itself, usually by age 10 as the child grows. You should discuss with your physician to make sure the child’s condtion is actually internal tibial torsion.
